Casa em East Hampton

[A “NATURAL” TOPOGRAPHY – ARTIFICIALLY DONE]
Within the 50,000 sq ft site we had an existing condition: An artificial pond that had to be filled in. This fact produced a new area suitable to build, increasing the design possibilities. We assume that this area should result as a new “natural” topography.

[AN ARTIFICIAL STONE – PARTIALLY RISEN]
The private spaces [and services] were placed on the ground level, precisely at the same level that results from this reclaimed area. We arranged this part of the program inside a solid volume, partially underground, like a massive stone rising from the ground. This intimate area has two independent cores: the first one shelters the master bedroom, the library and a work room; the second one is dedicated to the guest bedrooms and a shared private room. Both cores are linked but preserve their intimacy.

[THE CONSTRUCTION – OR THE TECTONIC THING]
Two parallel steel beams, spanning 112 ft, cross over the “stone”. They support the slabs that shelter all the social spaces which include: the porch, the living room, the dining room and the outside living spaces. Here, both independent private spaces reach the same area to share their social activity. The floor of this space is made by the top of the “stone”. Each room has its own outside area merging inside with the outside.

Under this structure the existing and the built combine to form a new landscape.
